Hast thou not seen how God has struck similitude? A good word is as a good tree--its roots are firm, and its branches are in heaven...and the likeness of a corrupt word is as a corrupt word is as a corrupt tree--uprooted from the Earth and having no establishment. Quran 14: 24, 26.

Building A Culture Of Peace & Nonviolence

Assalamu alaikum,

Winter weather in Pakistan's quake zone has tripled the number of people treated in hospital, with more than 1,000 a day seeking help for pneumonia and other ailments.

Relief workers and medical personnel on the ground fear that the severe winter and outbreak of diseases will spark a second wave of deaths among people already waekened by poverty and destruction.

Human Development Foundation is already engaged in the long-term rebuilding of villages in Kashmir and NWFP regions. However, we can't go on without your full-hearted support!

It is rewarding to now see is that people in many areas are taking charge of their lives, the economic activity is growing, the spontaneous reconstruction is in its full swing, and children are going back to school.

Read an insightful article, An Institutional Graveyard discussing the need to strengthen the institutions (educational, political, judiciary, and social work) in Pakistan to strenghten Pakistan's economy and people.

Peace,
HDF Team

Help the Sick Heal in Kashmir & NWFP this Winter!
Hundreds of people, most of them children, have contracted pneumonia this week in Pakistan's earthquake-stricken zone as harsh winter weather sets in. We are racing to ensure that homeless survivors get adequate shelter, medical supplies and enough food. Failing this, we will witness a second wave of deaths, as diseases will paralyze the poorly nourished survivors. Please help us save lives through your donations. [read more]

Political Economy of Reconstruction
The main concern with regard to pledges of external assistance received by Pakistan in the November 19 meeting in Islamabad is not simply that the major proportion of these pledges are in the form of loans rather than grants, but whether they will prove adequate for the rehabilitation and reconstruction purposes and whether they will permit the reorienting of our development priorities.

An Institutional Graveyard
Faced with this enormous burden to reconstruct an economy on which some 10 million people depend, the Pakistani state will also need to rebuild itself. Over the last 60 years, the state has been weakened to the point that it barely functions. In the institutional graveyard we find in Pakistan, tombstones carry such names as the civil administration and the system of governance; the judicial and legal systems; political parties, and the political system; and more.
