Ploughing for the Future

By Shoukat Ali

Village Illyas Ghirano is located in Unit 2 and possesses about 150 populations comprising 25 HH. HDF started its social organization process on 27th of November 2001 at this village and formed a Development Organization (DO) named Al-Shahbaz Tanzeem. Many of the people from this village became the members of this DO. Up to this time two credit loans have been provided to this DO. Among them two of the members, Mr. Bacho and Penar Ali, applied for the Agri inputs package and purchased two bullocks.

Before the loan Mr.Penar Ali and Bachoo used to plough the land with their own hands and they both used themselves on the place of bullocks as the source of support to plough the land. Sometimes, they used to borrow bullocks from others. It takes Rs. 300 to 400 to borrow the bullocks for ploughing one acre of land and it was very difficult for them to do this within limited income and limited resources. They both possess 5 acres of land and the total production of both the persons could not allow them to purchase bullocks for the land.

Mr.Penar Ali and Bachoo received loan of Rs. 12,500 each. They purchased two bullocks from HDF and now they are passing good life. Many other people hire their bullocks for days and weeks. This is adding considerable income to their families.

When I asked them how they will repay the amount, they told me that there is expected good income from the sugar cane crop which has been very well ploughed (Though water shortage has affected the weight of Sugar cane). They said that they would return the money before the deadline.

While interviewing from them about the facilitation of the ploughing land after the purchase of bullocks with the HDF credit they spoke one sentence in Sindhi:

“HDF Assan Khai jeeary widho Ahai. Asan joon Pirhiyoon hina Karz mann Faido Wathandion”.(Sindhi Language sentence)

Meaning: HDF has provided as living source and our coming generations will greatly get benefit from this credit.

I was very much happy and can never forget the real happiness and smiles on their faces when first time they saw their dream coming true of having two bullocks. It is the real story of the charming interest of the people in the credit programme.
