A New Year—and New Hope

HDF means hope
for the children of Bugna
It’s very quiet in the Bugna
Village Complex as the sun creeps
over the mountains, signaling the
start of another day. Winter has come
to the region, the air is cold, especially
up at Bugna’s elevation, almost
7,000 ft.
Even though it is quiet, people rise
early here. Many are farmers, and
there is land to tend to and animals
to be fed. Others work in the nearby
towns, villages and cities and must
prepare for the long journey. Children
rise to do chores before getting ready
for school.
Even before the terrible earthquake
last year, circumstances were difficult
to many of the people of Bugna. That
is one of the reasons HDF selected
this area as a place to do program
work. After the earthquake, however,
things are even more dire.
Yet, hope remains.
Through the work of HDF and our partner
organizations—such as the Pakistan
Association of Greater Seattle—we
have been able to address the most
immediate needs of the people here:
food, shelter, medical attention,
etc.
Now the attention is turning to helping
those people reclaim their lives.
Life must go on. There is work to
be done, families to be raised, children
to be educated. HDF’s mission
has always been geared to developing
communities to the point where they
are strong enough to be self-sufficient
and stand on their own. That is the
next step that needs to be taken with
Bugna.
Together, we have weathered the storm
and survived. Now, continuing to work
together, HDF and the people of Bugna
Village Complex will move forward
in their efforts to improve the lives
of those people on the mountain.
Please join us.
