The Nation, November 15, 2005
ISLAMABAD - For shelter-less families of Azad Kashmir, badly hit by the deadly
earthquake on October 8, Human Development Foundation (HDF), and NGO is today
bringing 115 fibreglass houses from United States of America (USA).
HDF is also spending Rs. 200 million for relief and reconstruction efforts
in the affected areas of NWFP and AJK under one village one organization plan,
informed Dr. Mazhar Abbasi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HDF during a news
conference on Monday.
These fibreglass houses will be given to the "poorest of the poor"
families in village Dilli and Dana of devastated Muzaffarabad, the ruined capital
of AJK.
As many as 27 US engineers are also arriving in affected areas shortly for
installations of these fibreglass houses manufactured by Alaska Structures.
Each of these wind-proof houses has two rooms (12x20 ft) with attached bathroom
and kitchens.
Outlining the features of HDF ideas for reconstruction and re-building devastated
areas of NWFP and Azad Kashmir, Dr. Mazhar Abbasi stressed the need for concentrated
efforts under formula of One village, One organization.
HDF has launched the relief and reconstruction efforts in selected areas of
AJK and NWFP after proper assessment of the situation and losses in such areas
he added.
The move was aimed at avoiding duplication of relief efforts and concentrating
on peripheral villages where no team or rescue volunteer reached, Abbasi further
said.
Selecting village Bunga and Pattian in Union Council Dilli of Muzaffarabad,
HDF has provided temporary shelter and clothing to 100 percent of the targeted
population besides providing them food rations and medical assistance by setting
up Forward Field Camp.
HDF also evacuated all the seriously injured people from this area besides
providing first aid and basic medical facilities to the targeted population.
Besides effectively combating epidemics in this area, HDF also provided safe
drinking water and food to the area people.
About the future plans of HDF, Dr. Mazhar Abbasi said the organization is aiming
to facilitate the reconstruction of broken houses in this village with effective
community participation.
Dr. Abbasi categorically pointed out though HDF was totally a development organization,
its resolve and spirit to help the destitute in devastated areas was not hampered
by formality of mandate.
With more than 80 staffers along with three hundred volunteers including one
hundred females, HDF has evacuated 600 patients with serious injuries to different
major hospitals and provided medical assistance to over nine thousand patients
in Field Medical Center, set up in village Bunga, soon after the disaster.
HDF has also distributed good quality tents among 1,000 house holds, 25 hundred
blankets and was presently engaged in reconstruction of accommodations for more
than one thousand house holds.
