Hameed Khan: Hero of the Poor
 Hundreds
of organizations in dozens of countries follow the Development techniques Dr.
Akhtar Hameed Khan developed, practiced and preached in Pakistan. He is the
messiah of human development. He practiced what he preached. He worked people
to build sanitation system in ten percent of Karachi homes with zero foreign
aid and at friction of the cost government does these thing. While working on
it he provided insight into how Pakistan can be rebuilt. The revolution called
Orangi Pilot Project is still delivering three years after his death.
Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan was
one of the world's most prominent social scientists from Pakistan who proved
his class by developing rural areas and low-income urban settlements through
Comila project in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and the Orangi pilot project
in Karachi. He achieved it through involvement and motivation of the common

Remembering Dr. Akhtar
Hameed Khan
In
the Memory of: Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan is a website that highlights the vision
& incredible accomplishments of the Late Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, in the field
of humanitarian and developmental work. It provides several articles/editorials/
condolences/letters written in his memory by several newspapers & prominent
personalities all around the world. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by
Michigan State University and was recipient of the Hilal-e-Pakistan, Sitra-i-Pakistan,
and the Magsaysay Award.
A
Few Hours with Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan Early in March, 1998, I visited the
famous Orangi Pilot Project (OPP) in Karachi. The OPP, a brain-child of the
legendary Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan, was launched in 1980 with the goal of facilitating
the residents of Orangi, a squatters colony, to construct their own sanitation
and drainage system.
The
Legendary Gandhian Akhtar Hameed Khan, is remembered, on his first death
anniversary, for his achievements in the field of urban management. His death
has been a loss not just for Pakistan but for everyone in the subcontinent.
But, like Gandhi, he will remain immortal because of the inevitability of his
ideas. Whenever countries like India and Pakistan begin governing themselves
better, they will be forced to remember what people like Mahatma Gandhi and
Akhtar Hameed Khan had taught.
