From Fisherman to Waterman
By YesPakistan.com Staff
“I am very thankful to God
that He sent HDF and grateful to all
the people behind it because their
program have given me new sprit and
have brought smile and brightness
on the faces of my children.”
This is what Muhammad Urs had to
say about HDF after a successful career
change.
Mohammad Urs of Adam Hangora Goth
was a fisherman but had to quit his
profession because of non-functional
boats and nets that were inadequate
to catch fish, not to mention the
fear of Indian Coast Guards arresting
him.
His career change options were quite
narrow due to his illiteracy and lack
of capital to start another business.
“It was the hardest time of
my life,” told Mohammad Urs,
“I saw my little children without
food and education, my wife in old
clothes and my parents without medicine.
At times I thought of committing suicide.”
Yet
he did not give up and decided to
borrow his friend’s donkey and
cart to supply water to the villagers.
This started to work out for him and
he was again able to provide for his
family. But, his worries were still
there. What would happen if his friend
wanted the donkey and the cart back?
On December 2001, Urs came to know
about HDF’s Development Organizations
(DO). “When some of my friends
told me about the HDF and its program,
I thought it is another new trick
by rich to make poor poorer.”
told Urs, “Therefore, I did
not pay any attention to its programs.”
After he started attending the meetings
of his neighbourhood’s DO his
misconceptions started to eliminate.
“I started thinking seriously
and joined the Khidmat DO of my neighbourhood.
I sent my two elder children to one
of HDF’s Child Friendly School.”
told Urs, “I thought that Allah
has sent them (HDF) in reply to my
long prayers.”
Urs became an active member of his
DO and was present for every meeting.
He also attended entrepreneurship
training which inspired him to purchase
the donkey water cart by taking credit
from HDF. He presented the idea to
the DO, after which Mohammed Urs received
credit for Rs.10,000. He bought the
donkey and the cart from his friend
in April 2002.
For the last two months Urs has been
earning Rs.300 per day. He is working
hard and most importantly he is working
successfully. He is planning to expand
his business by constructing an under
ground water tank and by purchasing
another donkey cart.
Now, not only can he afford to feed
his children, he is also providing
quality education for them. He is
able to meet daily household needs
and provide for his family.
